What is a commitment ceremony?

The term "commitment ceremony" usually refers to a public ceremony that celebrates the mutual commitment of two people without legally changing the terms of their relationship. Commitment ceremonies are held by couples who are not legally free to marry and by couples who want to celebrate their devotion without marrying. Because no laws govern commitment ceremonies, they can take any form a couple chooses. To learn more, go to the Alternatives to Marriage Project's page on commitment ceremonies.
